Icon The Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey

Post by TaylorUryuu »

The Monstrumologist series consists of The Monstrumologist, The Curse of the Wendigo, The Isle of Blood, & The Final Descent, by Rick Yancey.

What a series! Read each book in two to three days each, I was so captivated by them. I have since started using the phrase “Snap to!” as part of my every day life.

Will Henry is a child that has found himself living with a scientist- a Monstumologist. A scientist that hunts monsters. This was first attracted me to the books.

Dr. Pellinore Warthorp easily became the object of my affections- I’m not sure what it was about him: his enormous ego, or his witty way of speaking / verbally attacking Will Henry, I do not know, but I loved his character. Their relationship, however you may define it, was so interesting to read about throughout the series, and I was quite obsessed with the main characters, minor characters, and storyline.

Some parts of each book are slower than others, but each part is important. These are the kinds of books where everything is somehow connected, which is one thing that I especially loved. Details are important, but it is easy to pay attention, as some chapters seemed to fly by as I read them, I was so engrossed by what I was reading.

The story and character development is fantastic. I often found that what I thought to be true about most things, was not true at all. These books will keep you guessing, and will shock you, especially in The Final Descent.

Each is full of “adventure”, and is actually quite thrilling to read- very suspenseful. Each book has a different set of monsters that will make your imagination expand as you try and picture them while you read. Truly entertaining, funny, and I would recommend them to anyone, except maybe small children, even though Pellinore would.

“Yes, my dear child, he would undoubtedly tell a terrified toddler tremulously seeking succor, monsters are real. I happen to have one hanging in my basement.”
Overall, 5/5 stars

I am literally in the middle of reading the first book right now!!! Your timing is uncanny. So far im enjoying it, I live the language and the strained relationship of Pellinore and Will Henry. Now i need to 'Snap to!' And finish it.

This series was such a delightful surprise. While reading the Monstrumologist I couldn't decide if I liked the book or not. The subject matter is uniquely creepy, and the relationship between Will Henry and the doctor was not a "feel good" scenario. And then half-way thought the book I found I couldn't put it down and had to immediately read the next one.
