Sidon Charm and the Book of Mysteries by T.H.Williams is a book in the fantasy genre which would appeal greatly to young readers of the fantasy genre. This is the first installment in this series.

Thirteen year old Sidon Charm has never been beyond the confines of the small town of Cottonshire, England. With his life revolving around helping his dad with their farm and doing his homework, Sidon can only dream of traveling outside Cottonshire to explore the world. The only strange thing in his overly ordinary life is a birthmark on his chest which is shaped like a dragon. However, on his thirteenth birthday, his ordinary life changes dramatically as nothing appears to be as it is. After the tragic demise of his father, Sidon finds himself in a completely different world of immortal, mythical beings which is hidden from the human eyes. Sidon has to make his place in this magical world and his journey will start with the Legion, a school for Immortal Children, of which Sidon is a part now since he is the last Immortal Dragon. Now Sidon has to defeat the dark forces which are hunting him, since the survival of the world depends on it.

The author introduces the reader to the world of fairies, elves, vampires, goblins, etc in his book. This mythical world created by the author is interesting but it is something which has been explored by authors in this genre quite a lot. The author’s vision of a fantasy world is fascinating. There are several places in the book where I was reminded of the Harry Potter series, though the storyline is quite different. The author has put a lot of thought in constructing the characters in the book. Some of the characters are mysterious while others are downright cheeky. One of the characters I liked a lot was Max, whose sense of humor and cheek, made the book quite entertaining to read. The author has dealt with Sidon’s curiosity of the new world, his bouts of anger and his coming to terms with his inner animal quite well throughout the book.

I wish the author had explored Sidon’s relationship with his father equally well. There is an abrupt end to Tyrell Charm’s character in the book and the author has not completely explored Sidon’s sorrow at losing his father, his only parent. I hope the author takes up this string in the succeeding books.

Sidon’s journey in the immortal world is quite fascinating and there is plenty of material for the author to build upon in the succeeding books. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars .

Helpful review! I'm always looking for a series to revive the magic of Harry Potter, which really worked because of the characters. Max sounds like the kind of character I want to learn more about! I hope to see the author deal with some of the loose threads you mentioned in the coming books!

After reading your review, I aim to find this book. What is it about the Harry Potter-like fantasy world that continues to captivate? I find myself enjoying these young adult books while in my 40's as much as I did when I was young. Thank you for your informative work. :D

Good review. I like to read books about fantasy worlds so I can escape for a bit. I also like to read young adult books because they are usually easier to read and not quite as involved as adult books can be, so it's more of a break from some of the more intense books that are out there to read. This book sounds very interesting.
