Locee Lock’s My Never-Ending Story, by Walter T. Rogers, is a science fiction graphic novel about Locee Lock, who is from another planet. The story begins with a young girl asking her mother, “...what planet are you from? You don’t look like the locals here!” Throughout the story, we learn that the girl’s mother came from a world called Skylark, and she lived there with her parents and her brother. They were visiting another planet to record alignment of the planets in that solar system when they were attacked. This “freak accident” leads Locee Lock to her current life as a superhero and a single mother.

The storyline is very interesting, though I found it a little confusing toward the end. The characters and the plot are extremely creative and it provides a good base for a series. Unfortunately, there are a lot of spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book, such as “alinement” instead of “alignment” (though this was spelled correctly later in the book) and “witch” instead of “which.” There were also a handful of instances where there were unnecessary apostrophes for plurals, such as “probe’s” instead of “probes.” I also wanted to note that the term heroine - a person who displays courage and/or self-sacrifice in the face of danger - is misspelled as heroin - an illegal drug.

The artwork in this book is good. The characters are unique and it carries a classic, Batman-esque quality with visual “sound effects” occurring in action-packed scenes. The bright colors, and the array of colors, are very visually appealing. Rogers included a lot of interesting textures in the artwork that gives the images depth. I would recommend this book to teens and young adults who are interested in science fiction based graphic novels.

I strongly encourage Rogers to continue with this book and make it into a series because the concept is great. However, I also encourage Rogers to edit better to ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors to detract from the story; when there are errors around basic things, like spelling and punctuation, they can be distracting and pull the reader out of the story, making it harder to “get into the story,” and therefore, making it less enjoyable.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I would have loved to have given it a 3, but there were too many mistakes that could have easily been caught with better editing.

It's a shame when grammatical mistakes ruin an otherwise good story

You've made me regret not reviewing this book, although by the sounds of it, I probably wouldn't have made it through. Spelling and grammatical errors are my pet peeve! Thanks for the well-written review. Here's hoping you get your series...and some better editing!

The book sounds cool. What's with the girl on the cover though: is Locee some sort of cyclops? You pointed out some very good flaws (heroin). I enjoyed reading your review and I must admit, even though you gave this book a 2-rating I'm really interested in this book.
