Official Review (New Release): When Rain Rises by Sirus Hunt

Post by ananya92 »

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of When Rain Rises by Sirus Hunt.]

When Rain Rises by Sirus Hunt is a novel for young adults in the science fiction genre and it would appeal teenage readers. It is the first installment in the series.

The world has changed. The Brink wreaked havoc on the earth and most of the great cities with their populations were destroyed. There are only a handful of safe cities left in the world and Apollo is one of them. Rain Vivian is a poor eighteen year old who lives with his aunt and younger sister, Cloud, in an impoverished neighborhood in the city of Apollo. Rain has hardly received any form of institutionalized education and it is unlikely for him to get the job of his choice. It seems that there is no way for him to avoid conscription and to face the dangers waiting for him outside the walls of Apollo. When all options are exhausted and Rain feels that surely he’ll meet his death outside the city, hope comes in the form of the Vincent, a secret agency of spies. Rain is about to find out what exactly it takes to be a Vincent agent and how everything is not a game.

The author has given a very likable character to the readers in the form of Rain. His positivity, energy and most importantly, his desire to become legendary, will endear him to the readers. Rain has never been to a school and has learnt about the world from the books he nicked from the streets. Thus, he is intelligent, imaginative and curious to know about the world. His most obvious character trait, though, is his self-confidence which borders on arrogance, but instead of making him seem like a fool, it is entertaining to read about his escapades. The other characters are sketched pretty well too. Rain’s mentor, Aiden, is a suave, patient and cool mentor, who is greatly admired by his students. The liberal and unrestrained pair of huntress sisters, Bianca and Jasmine, are also fun to read about.

The storyline of this book made me think of a cross between Disney’s Aladdin and Kung Fu Panda for some reason. Rain is never let down by the fact that he is from the streets and he is eager to prove his worth to the other elite agents of the Vincent. His skills in running across rooftops and being resourceful from his street rat days are handy here. The author has packed some good fight scenes in the book, along with some futuristic fight gear, all of which lend itself to creating an interesting picture in the reader’s mind.

The writing style of the author is easy to follow and Rain’s adventures make for a delightful read. If the climax and the unsolved questions in this book are any indication, the subsequent books in the series are quite promising. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

Gotta love a good rags to riches--or in this case, rags to secret agent--story. Thanks for your review!

Nice review! Sounds like something I want to read but I can't find it on amazon. Even following the link from this site, it says that the book is not available.

Great job with this review!
