In Island Games by Caleb J. Boyer, Matthew and Ryan find themselves on a deserted island with no memory of how they got there or of their past. All they can remember is each other and being best friends. As they search for a way off the island, Matthew and Ryan discover that they must complete various challenges in order to receive prizes of food, water, and mysterious keys. As they battle obstacle after obstacle, such as sharks, quicksand, extreme temperatures, and more, they learn that they can only survive if they depend on each other.

Boyer kept the action and suspense going throughout the book. Island Games was well-edited and had many life lessons the boys learned along the way. This book was well written, and it is amazing to know that Boyer was only 12 years old when he wrote this book. Island Games is definitely a book I would give any aspiring child author to encourage and motivate their own journey.

I really could not find anything about this book I did not like. Island Games kept me engaged from the first page to the last. I loved how Boyer snuck metaphors for life into the boys’ adventures, and I relished how their determination and friendship grew throughout the book.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to any kid in elementary through high school who was looking for a book with action and adventure. They are sure to find what they are looking for and maybe learn a few great life lessons too.

With no vulgar language or sexual content, this would be a great read for preteens and teens looking for a book filled with adventure and suspense. Island games will keep them on the edge of their seat from beginning to end.
