Review of Island Games
Island Games: The Mystery of the Four Quadrants is the story of two best friends, Mathew and Ryan. Who find themselves stranded on a remote island, not having any memories of what happened or how they got there. The only thing they know is that they don't have any food or water, and they have to get off this island or else they will die. As they face hardship and challenges while looking for food and water, they realize that they have to stick together or they won't make it. So they face everything as a team and hope to find a way out of this mess.
The fact that the author, Caleb J. Boyer, was only 14 years old when he wrote this novel is impressive. The imagination and understanding of certain truths and necessities of the world he has are commendable. The story's ulterior message, as he states at the end of the book, made me look at the book differently. The book not only exists and has the element of a thriller but also focuses on teamwork, perseverance, and not giving up. Which are very important in life. I also thought that the author was smart to leave the book with an open ending. That would give him the chance to write a sequel, but also he would give a chance for readers to use their imagination and come up with different endings for the story, which is fun to read, especially if it was included at the end of the book.
There isn't much that I disliked about the book, apart from the excessive use of sarcasm by the characters. Sometimes it was misplaced, and I thought there could have been a little more seriousness in the plot. Because you feel like the characters are taking things lightly, which is not appropriate for the kind of situations they were in.
I would rate this book. a 5 out of 5 though, because of the age of the author and how well he managed to structure the book and the story. I found no errors in it as well; therefore, it was exceptionally edited.
I would recommend this book to young readers, but it could pass for an adult fun read. Since it's packed with action and suspense, I recommend that you don't read it in the dark if you are a scardy reader. The book has no profane language or sexual content, so it's very appropriate for minors.
