Review of Midnight on Fireworks Island
Joey Johnson is taken to the Rockweiler Academy of Corrections, which is designed to discipline boisterous children who have been sentenced for various offenses. Martin Smack taunts Joey and his best friend Figgy at the academy, forcing them to complete his assignments and torturing them when they refuse. Despite the uprising from his closest friend and fellow inmates, Joey is still determined to get all the boys out of the academy by teaching them the academy regulations so they can gain points and escape the school within the time limit set by the academy. The voice inside his head propels him to assist the other inmates in every way he can and withstand the pressure meted out by Blackburn, the principal; despite Joey's good deeds, he is sent to the dungeon alongside Martin. Read this fascinating book to find out what fate awaits Joey and the other inmates.
Midnight on Fireworks Island by Christopher N. Ciko reveals the unavoidable cost of actions taken by people from all walks of life. The characters in the book, who are all victims of circumstance, suffer enormous punishment, and this aspect of the book helps readers realize the devastating message being conveyed. The author uses the present tense to help convey his message, leaving readers wondering what the next occurrence will give birth to. Readers can infer Joey's efforts to leave the academy with the other prisoners, but their lack of understanding of his motivation and his zeal to keep fighting for their release until the day of their graduation only makes it endearing to keep turning the pages of the novel.
The aspect of the novel that I adored was the soul the author imbued in the lead character, Joey, who, despite his youth, was able to listen to his inner voice and distinguish right from wrong. What his fellows found alluring, he was able to resist and concentrate on his goal of regaining his freedom. I was moved by the unwavering spirit that kept him moving even in the worst circumstances. I was on the verge of passing out when Blackburn made him an enticing offer that was going to undermine everything Joey stood for and against, as well as what he genuinely represented.
I loved every page of the book; there was nothing I didn't like about it. The author was able to establish some connections between the characters and the readers. This component of the book that builds tension is another feature I adore since readers could tell what was going on in the characters' heads but were unable to predict what their next plan would be.
The book is not professionally edited. I detected various errors in it. I'll suggest that the book undergo a second round of editing so that it doesn't interfere with the reader's enjoyment. As a result of the numerous inaccuracies in the book, I'll give it four out of five stars. I recommend this lesson-packed read to fans of young adult fiction.
