Icon Book Review: Seed - Lisa Heathfield

Pearl knows nothing else except everything she has been told. She has a simple life, but a life that crumbles when a boy and his family come to Seed from the Outside. Yet the problem comes from within the forest walls.

This book has a lot to say, and tells a story which highlights struggles that are astonishingly still happening; struggles about having to conform and believe in what essentially you are forced to believe; struggles that can be applied to contemporary society.

I enjoyed this book massively. Each character could be picked fresh from the page, as they were so individual and beautifully constructed. The imagery was powerful, and I could see every sunrise and sunset clearly, as well as every brutality and chink in the armour of Papa S’s cult. The tale turns dark towards the end, and left me hanging on each word until I finished, but I WANT MORE!

This book should be read by all YA readers, and Lisa Heathfield did an amazing job of showing the easy mentality of following a leader. I learned that conforming does not make you weak, but it takes a great deal to stand up to those who make the rules.
