Review of "Dumb" Orphans
This is a wonderful book following the struggles and successes of a group of orphans in a community in South Africa. It leaves you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. This book is excellent at imagery by using descriptive words and pictures to accompany the words. The pictures help you visualize some things better. There were times when I was reading and having trouble imagining what was being described and then on the next page, I found an image showing what was being described. This book uses images strategically, only adding images when they are needed or will add value but not cluttering the book with lots of images. I love the theme of working together and ingenuity in the first trilogy, the theme of hard work and persistence in the second trilogy, and the theme, in the final trilogy, of loyalty to your community and fighting for equity and not just equality. Throughout all the chapters, this group of orphans had to come up with all kinds of crafty plans to live, prosper, and help their community and those around them. I did cry reading this book, a few times, tears of sadness at character deaths or misfortune and tears of joy for the moments of success and those heartwarming moments of bonding. As I read, I felt as if I got to know the characters personally. Their successes were my successes, their losses were my losses. This book is able to connect with me and affect my emotions on a deep level. Overall, this is an amazing book that I would rate 5 out of 5. I rated it that way because of the amazing storytelling, imagery, themes, and ability for me to connect with every single one of the characters. There were no grammar or spelling errors in the book, so it was written meticulously. Even sentences that seemed a bit weird at first are that way for a reason. There was a lot of thought put into this book for sure. The dialogue was also very good, the dialogue wasn’t excessive, sounded natural, and didn’t reveal all the character's motives directly. Overall, a great read, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes success stories and coming-of-age stories. Great job to the author and editing team!
