Meet Janice FreeCut, a “good” vampire, a much better version of the enigmatic, deadly creatures of the dark. She’s back home, along with her friends from Vampire World and her imposing boyfriend. The novel A New World by Rich Douglas, the second book of the Vampire World Series, follows the ups and downs, twists and turns Janice faces, as she tries to protect her loved ones from the nefarious blood-sucking monsters of TriFang.

The story captivated my attention right from the beginning. Though the narration seemed quite outspoken, I found myself puzzling over certain incidents, and as the story grew more and more baffling, I couldn’t wait to get to the ending. How the author picked a common notion – vampires – and turned it into a page turner about a bizarre yet intriguing world of fantasy, was interesting. Garlic, silver blades and stakes played a pretty big role in the story, like any other story woven around vampires. But the author had managed to throw a few interesting twists here and there, blending science with Goth. For instance, our protectors had “3D tats” and used Bloodstop ointment and the Sun protection pill to keep death at bay.

One technical error in the story bothered me. According to the story, water on earth was lethal to vampires. Then, how did they survive on blood? After all, more than 50% of blood is water! Although I found the plot engaging, I felt that the characters had room for improvement. Janice’s behavior confused me. There were times where she put others before herself, solved dilemmas quite intelligently and fought ferociously, but for most part of the story, she seemed like a spoilt, wayward teen. Brett was an appealing character but he seemed a bit too caring. I’m not sure if someone would be so patient with a self-willed girl who got into that many scrapes as Janice did. I felt that the book would have been a superb read, if not for the characters. That being said, I rate the novel 3 out of 4 stars.

This novel would be most suitable for young adults partial to vampires and readers who crave hardcore adventure. It’s got most things a typical teen would love - from tattoos and futuristic hairstyles to deadly, yet charming boys. If you hate fantasy and Goth, this is not the book for you.

I loved how the author dealt with themes like constancy and inconstancy, quite subtly. The story portrays how life could change within a split second, how new things replace the old, and how change is the only constant in life. The story also made me realize that no matter how things change our roots stay the same, making me recollect one of my favorite quotes: “The more the things change, the more they stay the same”.

Nice review, I really enjoyed reading it. The story sounds unique, but I think I've had my fill of "good vampires" for awhile! I'm sure that there are many others who would be interested in reading it, though.

Yeah, I agree. There's much hullabaloo over good vampires nowadays.
