Review of Second Rate Posse by Lola Beverly Hills
Second Rate Posse by Lola Beverly Hills is a young adult, contemporary novel that centers around teenager, Jada Williams. Jada longs for popularity in the halls of Melrose High, but with her social outcast best friends, Crystal and Junebug, that does not seem to be happening anytime soon. In an attempt to gain popularity and compete for the affections of Benjamin Banks, the star of Melrose’s basketball team, Jada must form a new posse that can rival that of resident mean girl Kiki Horn. However, as Jada is consumed by the competition to form the most popular posse at Melrose High she finds that life in the spotlight may not be all that she had hoped it to be.
Second Rate Posse begins with Jada and her best friend Crystal trying out for the cheerleading squad at Melrose High. This scene begins Jada’s attempt to ascend into popularity and her competition with the head of the cheerleaders, Kiki Horn, and her posse. The beginning of this book, for the most part, was very slow-paced and for this reason hard to read through. However, the pace began to pick up when the author begins to explore not only Jada’s point of view but also other characters’ points of view as well.
I enjoyed reading through multiple points of view of all the characters. However, I thought that the main characters of this novel, mainly Jada Williams and Benjamin Banks, were difficult to read. In my opinion, their characters lacked much depth of any kind. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the point of view of the side characters. Seeing their insight on the many problems in the novel and being able to view many different perspectives helped to enhance the quality of the novel.
For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. However, there was one main issue that I had a large problem with and that is the kind of language that is used. A large amount of colloquial language is used in this novel specific to a certain cultural group. While I appreciate that this kind of language is of course used in real life by teens I do believe that it was overused in the book to the point that it started to pull me out of the story while I was reading. I think that the overuse of this type of language will greatly diminish the amount of readers willing to read this novel.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel, but due to the overuse of colloquial language in both the dialogue and the character’s inner commentary my rating is 3 out of 4 stars. If you are a reader looking for a young adult, contemporary novel reminiscent of high school drama I would recommend this book.
