The Summer the World Ended- Matthew Cox

Post by jagersthebomb »

Hey everyone, new & first post here :)

I found this story to be absolutely heart wrenching. Starting off with a devastating loss, Cox quickly pulled me into a false sense of security as Riley-the main character- moves across the country and starts her life anew. As she tries to adjust to her new-found home in the barren New Mexico desert, small things just aren't adding up. Just as she meets some kids her age, and seems to be making friends-something she could never do back home- the unthinkable occurs and she must dig deep within herself to get through each day. The unexpected plot twists and heavy theme of loss throughout the story kept me glued to the pages. Cox is able to portray Riley as a distinctly relatable character to 21st century readers. I must admit, reading this story actually made me feel 'old and 'behind the times' of kids these days. Ouch.
When the truth about what has occurred finally surfaces, Riley finds herself forced to start all over-again. If you're looking for a novel that keeps you on your toes this story will definitely fill that role. Though I personally found that Riley's body issues were focused on just a tad too much, overall the story has a great flow and balance.
