Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Post by JoHelton07 »

A couple of days ago, I finished Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. It took me about two days to read. I simply could not put it down. While traveling between three states on four different flights, I became lost in this world. It was the perfect story to keep my mind off the turbulence of smaller aircrafts.

In the fall of 2011, I began my first year of college, much like Cath and Wren. It was a huge change: I went far from home, and I hardly knew anyone. In a lot of ways I was like Cath: I kept my writing a secret, I was terrified of where I was going to sit for breakfast/lunch/dinner. However, I was also a lot like Wren. I did not let these fears keep me from meeting others, from exploring campus life.

Fangirl was about so much more than an obsessive teenage girl. Cath used Simon Snow to escape, something all book
lovers can relate too. Harry Potter was, and still is, my Simon Snow; and the feeling of reading about a young woman so much like you, fictional or not, is so refreshing. It’s reassuring. You say to yourself: “Okay. I’m fine. There is nothing wrong with the way I am.”

Cath’s journey is so synonymous with young women and girls of all ages trying to find themselves. You don’t have to be a lover of books to understand what Cath and Wren are going through.

Rainbow Rowell truly understands her readers—understands readers in general, really. Being able to read a book and say: “That’s me! I understand!” is absolutely incredible. And I think that is the beauty of Fangirl.

Also, I think that every single book in existence should have built in bookmark ribbons like Fangirl had. It’s just smart thinking.
