Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

Post by Maglederer23 »

I had purchased this book on a whim at target, just as something to read over the weekend. I was not expecting the incredible and unique story I read. It begins with a sickly girl named Aza, who has an undiagnosed lung problem. Consequently, she only has one friend, Jason, and their feeligns for each other may not be purely platonic. Then, her sickness overcomes her but insteasd of the expected outcome, she is launched into a whole new world, Magonia, where she can finally breathe. Aza discovers much about herself and her power on the ship that sails through the skies. Much danger and intriguwe ensues, but I'd rather not spoil it. Altogether the book is unlike anything I have ever read, which is not a small pile. It is completely original and does not follow the usual YA profile: evil dystopian empire, underdog teenager, often female, and inevitable books two and three to complete the trilogy. Magonia does have romance and adventure, topics often sought after by readers of all ages, but the story line is not so overdone that you can predict the ending. Well done!
