The young adult novel Treasure, Darkly by Jordan Elizabeth takes place in a futuristic wild west. It was packed with mystery, paranormal activity, non-stop action, and romance. For the first half of the novel, I couldn’t put it down. Although I had some issues with the middle of the storyline, the novel proved to be a well-written book deserving of much praise. This is why I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

All Clark Treasure wanted was to make enough money in the mines to allow his mother to escape the pleasure house. Instead, Clark has turned into the army’s most wanted man. After mistaking a magic potion that has the ability to raise the dead for a bottle of absinthe, Clark believes that his only escape can come from the protection of his well-to-do father. With proof of his lineage, Clark is welcomed into the family and soon catches the eye of Amthysis, the prized Treasure daughter. It isn’t until a persistent ghost shows up with a wealth of information about his dark secret, supposed lineage, and unimaginable inventions, that Clark is convinced to start living life instead of running from it.

I felt like the writing style was descriptive and concise. The author made the reader feel immersed in the time and surroundings. At times I felt like I could actually taste the dusty, dry air. The imagery of the book was immaculately described from the lace embroidered gowns to the scowl that formed on a foe’s face. In my opinion, the author’s way of describing scenes propelled the plot and expanded the imagination of her readers.

The major flaw I encountered occurred when the author added a romantic tryst between Clark and Amthysis. I felt like the storyline was progressing fluidly, but then it hit a wall for fifty pages as she forced a relationship between these two characters. She does an excellent job describing the romantic tension between them, but it was also awkward reading about a brother and sister being attracted to each other. The awkwardness eased when Clark’s true lineage was revealed, but it didn’t help that only a few of the characters knew this fact. At one point, in front of a former flame, Amthysis was purposely rubbing up against Clark in order to get a reaction from him. Because of some of the adult content and innuendos in the novel, I would recommend this book to older teens.

Although the ending of the story was nicely set up for a sequel, I didn’t feel like any of the major plot points were resolved. There needed to be a final standoff with either a victory or defeat. I think it would have added to the appeal of the book if more situations were resolved instead of cutting the ending short. With this being said this novel deserves a glowing review and I think the next book in the series will provide more answers and surpass the appeal of the first novel.
