Review of "Loving Aretta"
They were probably destined to fall in love. Why else would two people living such different lives even cross paths? Matt had been unlucky in matters of love. He was neither smart nor very popular. Aretta was intelligent, and ambitious, wanting to live a quiet, satisfying life. Fate had something unique planned for Matt and Aretta. They had fallen deeply in love with one another without knowing what lay ahead of them. Will their love story be a success? What obstacles would they have to face? Would they be enough for one another? Read Loving Aretta by R.W Mathis to find out.
I was not particularly impressed with this love story. The author mentioned in the summary that the readers should expect some sexual encounters, but I found these encounters more cringy than pulse-racing. The opening chapters of the book are full of uncomfortable sexual episodes.
The book is written for young adults, so one can safely expect high-school bullying, teenage crushes, moody tantrums, popularity contests, etc. But the author takes all of these things to a level that becomes extremely hard to relate with. I thought the primary reason was the way the story was narrated. Everything seemed childish and too artificial. Aretta’s mother trying to sex-educate her was my most disliked portion of the book. It was neither educational nor dealt with the sensitivity the topic deserved.
There was nothing that I liked about the book. The only good thing is that the book is professionally edited. I did not come across any grammatical errors. I had no takeaways from the book. It is too lengthy to stay connected with. I was also not a fan of the author’s character development efforts. Overall, I would rate the book 2 out of 5 stars.
The book is not for sensitive readers. There are some racy sex scenes and considerable foul language. I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this book to other readers, but young adults that do not mind cringy romance can give the book a try.
