The Scorpion Rules - Erin Bow (Spoilers)

I found the plot line of Scorpion Rules to be rather exciting. At the beginning, it is very bluntly stated that the AI kills children of countries that start war as a measure to keep the peace. And then the story starts with Greta. I first assumed that Greta was normal. But the further into the story that I went the more the plot revealed that Greta was not supposed to be normal. Actually the writer wanted you (the reader) to feel that Greta is strong and unfeeling; like a robot. Then all of a sudden the book makes Greta into this crying, wimpy child that can't decide who she is in love with: her Asian roommate or the new guy in town. I felt that the ending was a nice twist to the usual story telling but was not pulled off very well. It left me with more questions than I thought was necessary and made me feel uninterested in the whole book. I would recommend The Scorpion Rules to someone that doesn't necessarily like happy endings and wants to think about the book for a day after.

The Scorpian rules has a very interesting premise with the hostages, 'children of peace', and the rogue AI enforcing rules of engagement. It isn't one of my favorites that I've read recently because in discovering herself, the main character Greta becomes quite vulnerable and wishy washy. I simply prefer a strong lead. I like that the ending isn't a happy one, because i simply don't see any way that it could have had one without breaking the premise it was founded on. I believe the author is trying to make a point about not knowing what you have until you've lost it and sacrifice for the greater good. Overall, I enjoyed it- but it wouldn't be among the top books i'd recommend to others.
