Great review!
No, not at all. The religious aspect of the book consisted of church folk rejecting the young pregnant girl, and the mother-in-law's incessant critizing. Don't let it deter you from reading this excellent story. You would really miss out.

That was one of my favorite parts of the book, too! That girl was fearless.

The saying you have to understand your past to understand your future, aptly describes the significance of this book. It's a strong willed reaction to a world of prejudice. I like books with great historical significance. Thankyou for a great review.

The title's enough to stop me from my tracks (if I was walking); it is eye-catching. And the review's sagacious simplicity is enough to tell that this book could be worth my while. I look forward to reading the story of the character's brevity against racial discrimination and outright ridicule of hypocrisy of the society; definitely a no-nonsense plot.

Thanks for this review. It sounds like this first time author has really rendered her setting well, and spun a good story out of it.

She sees hypocrisy and struggles to understand the inconsistencies between people's platitudes and their actions. Patti Jo often gives words to her thoughts unfiltered, and has to suffer the consequences.
Sold! :D
I'm coming very late to this but I loved your review and I love the sound of the book. I'd really like to read this - need to check it out anyway, to decide whether the younger members of my (British) family could cope with history element.

This should be an awesome book because of the strong, independent female protagonist. I enjoy reading books like this wherein the main character is stubborn and strong-willed.

Anything similar to To Kill a Mockingbird gets my vote.

I'm glad you mentioned feminist readers would enjoy it, because I was on the fence with the title and time period. Historically you said it was accurate, which will probably be one of the things to make me angry, but it's good to know your history. Coming of age tales are usually good reads, and this one has me interested. Thanks for writing !
