The Prism Effect by J. Wint follows Jet Stroud, a college freshman plagued with the mysterious E.M. E.M. stand for Ephebus Mortem, a rare disease that brings bad luck. Any person unfortunate enough to have E.M. is marked by glowing eyes, and they are doomed to die before their 24th birthday. When Jet arrives at Skylight University, he learns more about his unique disease, and that there are others – though very few – like him at the college. Jet is determined to find the other students who have this strange disease and hopefully find a cure before any of them die.

I absolutely loved this book. Although it is a sci-fi novel, it does not get into so much technical science that it loses the reader, as I’ve experienced with other sci-fi books. The story is enticing, and the plot keeps readers engaged throughout the entirety of the novel. The main set of characters are extremely relatable, and readers can enjoy following them on their suspenseful journey to try to find a cure.

There was nothing I found unlikable about this book. It was well-edited and had few mistakes, and the characters are all 3 dimensional. The writing style doesn’t distract from the book, and the imagined words are easily explained by the author so that the reader doesn’t get confused at anything strange.

I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars because I can’t find anything inherently wrong with it. It was one of the best sci-fi/fantasy books I’ve read this year, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I would recommend this book to teens and young adults who enjoy the sci-fi and fantasy genre, because they would be able to relate to the characters and would enjoy the suspenseful plotline. I would not recommend it to children, as it deals with the ever-looming prospect of death, and heavily leans on that theme throughout the book.
