Kelln El'Han and Darius San Williams are best friends in the kingdom of Anikari. With fiery red hair and a knack for involving Darius in his adventures, Kelln is the son of a celebrated sword maker. Darius, the only son of King Edward's chief councilor, is endowed with charming good looks and a more cautious disposition. The story begins with the two boys exploring a secret basement chamber under their school library. They discover an ancient relic in the 250-year-old castle-turned-school that, unbeknownst to them, will start them on their greatest adventure yet.

Darius learns he can do magic, but he tries to keep it hidden because of laws forbidding magic in Anikari. The usually level-headed Darius suddenly finds it difficult to control his emotions, which seem to fuel displays of his new abilities. Darius is not the only one with magic power. It reveals itself in different ways, through different characters as the plot builds toward its climax. Add in horses that connect with people through mental telepathy, an evil wizard stirring up dissent in the realm, and forbidden love between a nobleman's son and a farmer's daughter, and you have the makings of The Path of Destiny, by Mike Shelton.

Mr. Shelton's debut young adult novel is Book One of the Cremelino Prophecy Trilogy. It is captivating. The characters are relatable, and the reader gets lost in their plights.

Fantasy fiction fans of all ages will enjoy this book. It has all the elements of a great fantasy novel: magic, good vs. evil, adventure that tests individual character and friendship, and even a bit of light romance. Mr. Shelton has done an excellent job in this first novel.

Readers who prefer fantasy stories that include graphic descriptions of combat scenes and more intense romance may not enjoy this book. This story fits squarely in the young adult category. It is clean and focuses more on character development than on sensational appeal.

While there is magic in the tale, there are also questions about religious faith. Mr. Shelton includes in the plot questions many young adults have about God. Readers can sympathize with the characters as they ponder whether there is a God, where God can be found, and how one knows if God is present. While this novel is not classified as Christian fiction, Mr. Shelton is a Christian author. I am eager to see how he will further develop the element of faith in the storyline of the next two books.

I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. The editing is professional and the writing keeps the reader enthralled until the very last page. I look forward to reading the remaining two installments in the Cremelino Prophecy Trilogy. Read The Path of Destiny. You will not regret it.

I have read this book a few months back and I really enjoyed it. Though I found the ending a little anticlimactic, I understand that it was a preparation for the second book. Great job on the review. Congratulations to Mike Shelton on such a high rating.
