The book, The Prism Effect: Book One of The Skylight Series by J. Wint, is a well-written young adult science fiction novel set in the far future filled with enough action, adventure, and mystery to keep any young (or older) reader engaged.
Standout parts of this book involved how the characters had “complicated” relationships. The author gives a diverse group of students with well-developed personalities. While attending a university they become intertwined throughout the quick-to-read chapters. Unfortunately, this is due to a “condition” they share. Ephebus Mortem is the name given to the mysterious and fearful affliction that ostracizes the group of students from their peers. The infliction makes their lives highly stressful due to their projected lifespan of less than 24 years old. The lead student, Jet, sets out to find a “cure” for this awful congenital curse they have in common and recruits the others to help him, whether they want to or not as it is a matter of life or death that they secure the answers they are searching for.
While reading the book, I thought it was very reminiscent of the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. The storyline was developed around the main character, Jet, and his peers who attend Skylight University much like Harry at Hogwarts. Several of them are athletes who play a game called “Blaze” which reminded me of Quidditch. Other similarities in the book would be apparent to fans of the Harry Potter series. This could be considered good or bad depending on the reader’s taste.
After reading J. Wint’s first book in the series, I highly recommend it. If you are looking for a quick, fun read this is it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and think others will too. I give this book a 5 out of 5 due to the engaging and superbly written content. Now, I will look forward to future books in the series.
