I just finished Love, Hate, and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed and I can't stop recommending it to everyone! It's a great story about timeless YA themes: growing independence, creating an identity within and separate from your family, knowing (or not) what you want to do with your life... But this story is told from the viewpoint of a young woman raised in an Indian Islamic family, only Maya isn't sure what she believes or where her Indian-American selves end and the other begins. How does she figure that out without hurting her family or herself - and will it tear an entire community apart? I cannot wait to pre-order Ms. Ahmed's next story - it's that good!

Dude, I love “I’ll give you the sun” and “we were liars” so much! We were liars definitely ruined my night when I finished it, but still, it’s a treasure.

I recommend “The Girl Who Drank The Moon,” by Kelly Barnhill. It’s witty, charming, fast paced and poignant.

Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy is fantastic. I enjoyed them so much I reread them a year back and loved them just as much. Dark, mysterious and very relative to the state of the world we live in.

Hey, I will strongly recommend you to read Water song series by Amanda Hocking. It was recommended to me by my friend who lent it to me and after I finished reading it I regretted not having it in my stock of books. It's based on sirens.

There are a lot of great suggestions on here. I love Young Adult fantasy and see quite a few that would probably be very engaging.

Recommend YA:
The Hunger Games
Divergent
Unwind
Legend
The Maze Runner
The selection
The Gender Game
The darkest minds
The girl who dared to think
Vampire academy
Lux series
The vampire assistant
The uglies

Just a few to start off with. I can recommend many more. But I don't read much contemporary so I can't offer much on that end if that's what your looking for.
