Lotus Blood by Dean Norton is a young adult, fantasy novel with a story-line you have probably never heard of before, but I think the less you know about this book before reading it, the better. So without revealing any spoilers, the plot follows Nam, a teenage girl who grew up in England with an English father and a Thai mother. After her mother inherits an old hotel in Thailand, her, her parents and her twin brother pack up and move across the world to live there and get the hotel up and running. During their stay in Thailand, the family suffer through a tsunami and Nam’s mom goes missing. While searching for her mother, Nam has an unforgettable adventure where she finds long lost relatives, learns to battle forces within and without and realizes she has a much more important role to play in the world than she ever thought possible. Throughout all of this Nam must remember to pay heed to her mother’s words: to hold on to yourself and not get lost in the whirlwind.

The title and cover art of this novel were incredibly eye-catching and the whole concept of the book was very unique with the author combining Thai folklore in a modern setting and with modern characters. Having said that, I still feel like the author could have added a little more information on the mythology to help us better understand what was going on. I ended up having to Google search some information which should have already been in the book. I heard that this is the first novel in a series so maybe the author will give more details about the folktale in the upcoming novels.

The story starts out with a lot of action but then it slowly fades away, which left me feeling like this book was a little too long. I have to admit the beginning was confusing. I had trouble understanding exactly what was going on and there were a few things that were never properly explained. What also confused me was that certain times throughout the book, I did not know if I was supposed to take things literally or as a metaphor.

The characters in the novel were adequately written although I found it was harder to relate to and understand the main character than it was to like all the secondary characters. At times Nam came off as cold.

Unfortunately, throughout the book there were a few grammar mistakes and a lot of times there were verbs that were not properly used.

For all these reasons I decided to give this book 2 out of 4 stars.

Overall, Lotus Blood by Dean Norton has a great plot to start with but it still needs more editing and maybe a little more emotion to make it easier to root for the main character. I would recommend this book to any fans of fantasy, young adult novels, or folktales.
