As readers, nothing enthralls us more than books that are set in fictional places, primarily because fantasy fiction carries great scope for imagination; there is no limit, frankly. A book based in a made-up world can have dragons, monsters, and whatnot.

The book is set in the two kingdoms of Bowden and Calderaun, which are separated by mountain peaks. and have been experiencing border clashes and problems for a while; however, they are quite dependent on each other. The two kings are pondering ways to make their relationship peaceful by figuring out the reasons for the clashes. The kings are considering a marital alliance when the wizard Grim sends out a message through his son.

The Wizard is a very peculiar character; he accidentally finds himself in the realm and is unable to open a portal, which is why he makes the mountains and the forest his home. He is a powerful man who is offering his support to the kingdoms to defeat the invading dragon. The Wizard has developed an understanding of nature's distinct ways of functioning and the languages of different animals.

The book further traces the journey of these two kingdoms, their hesitancy towards the wizard, the impending problem, and the difficult decisions to make to solve their troubles. The book has talking animals and strong female leads like Princess Gywn. It also has illustrations!

Grim Knights, Book 1 of the Grim Chronicles , written by Mr. D. R. Martin, properly utilizes this extent of creative freedom to build a captivating world of magic and mayhem. The author has successfully added serious depth to the plot by presenting the narration of the story through different characters and their unique perspectives. The world-building of the book is super fine; however, the extensive descriptions of places and scenes can be done without.

Nevertheless, the book deserves 5 out of 5 stars for keeping the reader invested till the end. Another attribute that I loved about The Grim Knights is that it doesn't follow the overdone damsel and hero narrative but presents a story where each character has an important role to play.
