The Cemetery Boys by Heather Brewer

Post by MindyW »

A true thriller, tailored for the young. Are you sick of your life? Tired of being taken for granted by adults? Are you done with your parents putting you through circumstances you feel as though you can never control?
Steven is tired of his loss of control. Finished with the horrible things that he is dealing with. It was bad enough that his mom went crazy. The fact that his father has gotten to the point that he can't keep their financial situation under wraps drives them fawn away from the home he has known in Colorado. The tiny town, village really, that they move to is the very place his father grew up in. Spencer has a population just over 800. The two new arrivals are moving in with the meanest woman on the planet, Steven's grandmother. A woman who has never, in his whole life, even given him a second thought, a card, or a phone call. A woman who is giving them shelter, but not without the price of their slave labor.
Steven and his dad are not welcome guests so much as free labor to repair and paint the old woman's home. A difficult ordeal, sure, but that was not the worst of it. Steven's mom was far away, in an asylum. He hasn't called her since they moved. Not able to bring himself to do so. Angry at his mom for becoming sick, and angry for not being able to change any of it, Steven is lost.
The first friend he makes is in the dead of night. A figure stands at the sidewalk outside his window, pointing in his direction. Hurried out to see who it was, Steven finds a battered book on the sidewalk. Following the figure in the darkness, he is led to a home with two people arguing inside. The girl, who he seen earlier, at a restaurant, pushes out the front door of the home. She is pretty, alluring, and mysterious. It was there, on her front porch, that he makes a fast friend that becomes something more in the fast approaching days. That night, though, it is the third figure who showed who gets his interest. Cara's twin brother Devin, the boy who had been pointing at his window, joins them on the porch.
This is the start of bad choices. Bad relationships. Bad cards being dealt to Steven at every turn. The boys, Devin's friends, become his friends too, so he thinks. They hang out at the playground, the local name for the old cemetery. Local legend is passed to him. Legend of the Winged Ones and the Bad Times. The only solution to end the Bad Times and sate the need of the Winged Ones is a sacrifice. Trouble is, the last sacrifice wasn't accepted.

This is a great read! I score this book as 4 out of 4 stars. Humor, intrigue, twists and turns, and keeping your interest the entire way earns every star! Very original, with a nice horror flick feel to it. I'm sure Steven King wishes he wrote this one.
