Breksta’s Academy by Natasha Quay is a heart-wrenching science fiction novel that chronicles the journey of a young girl named Breksta. When Breksta’s idyllic life is turned upside down by the Academy after she is separated from her mother, Breksta is forced to make new friends and work towards creating a better future for the Dreamers of the world. The story’s complex plot line reveals how humanity is broken and friendship is necessary to thrive in a cruel and complicated world.

Quay’s writing style was incredibly engrossing. I found myself emotionally invested in each of the characters’ individual journeys, as well as the overarching plot of the entire novel. The various settings of the book were richly described with colorful and vibrant imagery. I also appreciated the complex personalities of the characters in this novel. Rather than having specific characters be inherently good and others bad, as is the case in many young adult novels, Quay created well-rounded characters who often struggled to act with good intentions in difficult situations. This creative choice made the characters much more relatable and I was better able to empathize with their internal conflicts. This book was also professionally edited; it only contained two minor typos.

My only complaint concerning this novel is rather minor and is a matter of personal preference. Towards the end of the book, there were descriptions of magic that are rather mystical and occult. While this did not personally hinder my enjoyment of the book, the supernatural nature of the magic in this novel may bother some readers, especially those who are devoted to a religious faith.

Overall, I immensely enjoyed Breksta’s Academy. The intricate plot line, complex characters and well-established settings all combine to create a masterpiece of science fiction literature. I award this novel 5 out of 5 stars.
