Richard Read’s "Finally Thirteen!" is a delightful and engaging coming-of-age novel that stands out in the young adult genre. Set in Columbus, Ohio, the story revolves around the lives of junior high schoolers Cali, Tab, Skyler, and Otis. The novel is a vibrant depiction of adolescence, filled with relatable experiences and memorable characters.

The book's strength lies in its candid and conversational style, making it a quick and enjoyable read. From school dances and picnics to football matches and entrepreneurial projects, the story captures the bustling life of seventh graders. The narrative's fast pace is complemented by various subplots, including a parent-teacher romance, a rave party, and a business venture interrupted by government bureaucracy. These elements add depth without overwhelming the main storyline.

One of the most compelling aspects of "Finally Thirteen!" is its handling of sensitive issues. Topics like puberty, drug use, parental controls, and bullying are addressed with great sensitivity and realism. The conversations between characters provide valuable lessons in handling difficult discussions, making this a beneficial read for both young adults and their parents.

Skyler’s humor and Calista’s assertiveness are particularly noteworthy, making them standout characters. Skyler keeps the tone light and entertaining, while Calista serves as an excellent role model for young girls. The portrayal of educators like Mr. Taylos and Principal Mrs. Cooper is commendable, highlighting their positive influence on the students.

The novel also effectively uses music to convey emotions, with references to both contemporary tracks and classic melodies. This adds an extra layer of connection for readers, making the characters' experiences more relatable. The subplot involving local drug dealers introduces suspense and keeps readers on edge, particularly during the climax.

Overall, "Finally Thirteen!" is a fantastic read for pre-teens, teens, and their parents. It convincingly portrays the challenges and joys of teenage life through relatable characters and realistic events. Richard Read has crafted a compelling narrative that leaves readers eager for more from the series. With its engaging style and sensitive handling of important issues, "Finally Thirteen!" earns a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars.
