[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Hyena's Stare" by Sandra Clark.]
Title: THE HYENA'S STARE
Author: Sandra Clark
This novel is chunky and absorbing, with supernatural, magic, and good, down-to-earth storytelling elements. The reader is transported to an area deep within the Ethiopian bush, where superstitions still sway the local people's thoughts. Could there be truth to these myths and superstitions? Reader, read on. Dr Laura London leaves her job and fiance, Max, for a short contract at a mission hospital in Ethiopia. When there, she treats prevalent malnutrition and leprosy, but there is also something much more sinister affecting the local population. She is caught up in some life-threatening situations. Can she and the very able nurses and assistants cope with and contain this dreaded disease? The story is not just intriguing, but also filled with unexpected twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This is a compelling, well-written novel. Although I found only one grammatical error, I will still award the book five stars, as it is worth it. There has been evident research into many aspects, and I feel this book deserves nothing less. There is a clear beginning, middle, and ending that will raise the reader's eyebrows. Sandra Clark has a talent for telling a good story; this one is no exception! There are horrific scenarios, yet gore descriptions are kept to a minimum; it is thankfully devoid of extreme profanity and graphic sex, so the book is suitable for younger teenage readers. The prose is easy to read with no unnecessary wordy descriptions, and I read the book within a day. It is nice to be transported to East Africa in our minds, and the atmosphere of the country was nicely communicated.
This book would make a lovely children's movie. The local wildlife aspect is also an excellent learning opportunity, as are the interesting aspects of life in this amazing-sounding country.
