Review of Truthseeker
It is set in the mystical environment of Theryl—a place that exists only within fantasy—where gods, beasts, and humans balance delicately against one another. Truthseeker centers on Sulfur, a young hunter born into a mystery linking her with a goddess named Eminess. As a baby, Sulfur had weird yellow patches on her skin and was abandoned. Now, she has opted for the most perilous way of unlocking secrets from her true identity and her mission in life as a seeker.
Confronted by monstrous creatures and the looming war instigated by the tyrant Emperor Tiger, at every turn of events, she stands with the fortitude of her mentor Darsh and a host of variegated allies. Leyland Goldwell masterfully weaves in threads of self-discovery, loyalty and the struggle between good and evil into a frenetic crescendo of climactic proportions that tests Sulfur's resolve and the bonds of her newfound family. Rich in world-building and character development, this is a compelling tale of courage and destiny. It was well edited and free of errors.
What really blew my mind in this book was the way it combined rich world-building with deep character development. The author has certainly risen to a real and immersive world where gods, beasts, and men interact within such a complex tapestry of myth and lore. On a personal note, the most fascinating character was Sulfur. It's just brilliant to see how her character develops from a deserted child into a determined Seeker.
I'll never forget how she became a Bloodcat because it not only showed her special ability but also the fight that was persisting through her inner self. That's probably one of the deeper layers in her character, which makes her journey of self-discovery even more poignant because she can actually grapple with memories and emotions left inside her from creatures she's turned into. Skilled in balancing action, emotion, and mythology, this has really made me grade this book 5 out of 5 stars since this truly is an unforgettable read and a true standout within the fantasy genre.
But I think the book would have been a lot better if some of the secondary characters were fleshed out more. While Sulfur's story is cool, the other characters like Taha and Ruji would have benefited from a lot more development. That would have added much depth to the story and make their relationships and arcs all that powerful and engaging. I really think fans of epic fantasy and adventure would enjoy this book.
