Dumb Orphans by Allan Low is an amazing tale of hope and overcoming adversity.

Dumb Orphans starts with an orphan, Sipho, narrating his experience of being an orphan in Bundami Valley. He, along with his sister and five cousins, are looked after and cared for by a fellow orphan, Aiyasha. The second story within the book is narrated by Elah, another orphan taken in by the “Bundu Bunch” of orphans. She continues the story of the orphans as they attempt to make better futures for themselves. The last story is also narrated by Elah as the orphans become adults and strive to improve the lives of the underprivileged in their country.

This is a children’s book with the goal to not only entertain but educate. The way this story can reach kids on a level they are able to understand complex issues speaks volumes on the talent of Low as an author. Complex issues such as education inequality, corrupt leadership and overcoming adversity can be hard to convey to children but Low simplifies the issues in a way that is digestible for children.

One aspect that I really enjoyed about the book was the narration. As the orphans grew, their narration and language developed and matured with them. This added depth to this book that elevated it beyond a children’s book. Even as an adult, I really enjoyed the stories of the “Bundu Bunch”.

The topics discussed in this book are complex and mature topics. While the book did an excellent job bringing it down to a level appropriate for children, there are certain topics that parents need to be aware of so they can make the appropriate choice of age level for this book. It does cover the topics of violence and retaliation which may not be suitable for all age levels.

Overall, this was a wonderful book. I really enjoyed the narration style of the book and enjoyed the way Low brought complex topics and issues to a level children can comprehend and think about. There were minimal errors to detract from the story and I cannot think of any way I would improve upon this book. I give it five out of five stars.
