Grim used his magic to provide several species of animals with “awareness.” The wizard made his home among the wolves and formed an animal alliance. One autumn morning, Grim tells Bertha, a wolf, to bring her brother Howl and cousin Peat to escort her to Crater Lake. She worried about Howl's ability to make the trip since Takori had caused the injury he was recovering from. Howl and Bertha have magical attributes. Peat lacked magic but could speak several languages. Meeting Takori allowed Peat to deliver a message from Grim. Bertha leaves with the dragon for her apprenticeship in fire and philosophy.

Meanwhile, Nola, a wolf who can change into a falcon, encountered problems with her mission. Nola used her magic wind ability against King Manxz’s fleet. However, she didn’t know King Manxz had enlisted the services of Lord Vaun Raven, a wizard armed with dark magic. Lord Raven sends a phantom griffin to attack Nola. Barely escaping with her life, Nola and the Red Tail Squadron inform Grim about King Manxz’s forces landing at Calderaun’s docks. The animal commanders throughout Grimsland set up elaborate plans to defend their homeland. King Manxz’s forces threaten the kingdom of Bowden. King Eorek is shocked when he sees the neighboring kingdom of Calderaun allied with Raunfit. Who would win the war?

Grim Daze is the second book in the Grim Chronicles. Grim is a wizard who used to fight for King Manxz. He fled Raunfit after he scarred King Manxz’s face. The unpredictable plot is full of vivid details that don’t slow the pace of the story. The story is told from the perspectives of multiple characters on both sides. Takori seems to be important to the culture of several kingdoms. In exchange for meat, the dragon assists farmers by cultivating the land and enriching the ground. Raunfit’s king is a tyrant, but he doesn’t involve himself in fighting. Out of Manxz’s military forces, Tristen Hessel and Prince Hagen were the most intriguing. However, they were also the most conflicted.

Grim Daze is an exceptional fantasy book that doesn’t need any improvement. Grim Daze describes every battle with exceptional detail. During their missions, I almost forgot some characters were animals. Their tactical abilities and emotions made it easy to relate to their circumstances. One of the most memorable scenes depicted a bear using two skunks like guns to take down a troop of soldiers. There are two privates who are tasked with cleaning the latrines; the irony that one of them is called Fudge shows the humor included within the book.

Grim Daze was captivating. I enjoyed the book so much that I am eager to read the entire series. I rate this fantasy story five out of five stars. The exceptional character development, colorful descriptions, engaging dialog, and entertaining clashes between the animals and soldiers support the perfect score. The black-and-white illustrations enhance the book’s appeal.

Grim Daze will appeal to fans of magical fantasy stories filled with battle scenes. Some minor profanity and violence are involved in the book. This book is best suited for young adults who enjoy dramatic stories of survival.
