Island Games was an exciting book written by a 12-year-old named Caleb J. Boyer. It started out when Matthew woke up on a sandy beach and found his best friend Ryan laying next to him unconscious. With no idea how they arrived there and no memory of their lives, their first thought was to find a way to survive. The only facts they did recall was that they are best friends and without food and water they would die. On their first attempt to find food and be rescued, they went in the direction of an abandoned boat they noticed in the ocean . That journey left them with the realization that nothing was safe or to be trusted as they continued. They discovered that after they risked their life with whatever monumental obstacle they came across, they were rewarded with food packets and water. Sometimes along with the food and water, they also received a survival tool or supplies that would prove to be beneficial in the future. As they made their way through the island, the climate and atmosphere suddenly changed without warning, leaving them to adjust to the changes. They experienced the jungle, the prairie, the dessert, the frozen mountains, and the forest.
I was astonished at the realization that this book was written by a 12 year old because it was written with such precise detail and without any editing mistakes. It definitely kept me wondering what new obstacles they were going to face, and excited to find out what new tools they would be given to continue their journey.
The only aspect I would have liked to be a bit more interesting, was to create a variety of different land monsters. Although they faced different water monsters, the ones on land were always the same. Despite this tiny detail, the story was packed with action and adventure and was definitely worth reading.
I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars. The strong message of teamwork and overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles as well as, the flawless editing, exciting storyline and meticulous attention to detail made it a must read. I almost felt the climate change, the hunger pains, and the fear of the unknown right along with the characters.
I recommend this book for children ages 9 to 14, as well as teachers to have in their classrooms. Not only is it an exciting book that they will enjoy, the fact that the author is 12 years old might inspire more children to try and create their own stories. So prepare to embark on an amazing adventure as this gifted author allows you to explore this incredible island.
