Review of A Dream of Destiny

Kyle has been having the same dream every night of a sinking ship and his brother drowning. He also wakes up at 3 a.m. each night. Mira dreams of a woman, a tree, and a tomb. She, too, wakes up at 3 a.m. each night. Both teenagers meet on a cruise ship, the very ship that appears in Kyle's dream. They realize that their dreams might be connected. What do these dreams mean? Will Kyle and Mira be able to keep their dreams from coming true? A Dream of Destiny by P H Townsend holds all the answers.

Townsend did an excellent job of building suspense throughout the novel. Kyle's dreams and the added detail of waking up at 3 a.m. every day created a sense of urgency. Kyle also could not exactly confide in his family, as they might think he was crazy. He also had to endure sleep loss and the nagging feeling that his dream was a premonition. His character was quite compelling, and the fast pace of the novel added to the suspense.

I think that Townsend could have spent a bit more time on characterization. Given the large cast, I had a bit of a hard time keeping them all straight. There were also a few that could have been better developed. For example, Lyssa, one of the other kids on the cruise, appeared throughout the book, but I did not feel I had a good grasp of her personality.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I am taking off one star due to the previously mentioned issue. Otherwise, it was an excellent read. It was also well-edited; there were only a few errors throughout the book. A Dream of Destiny is a fantastic young adult novel that those ages thirteen and up would enjoy. It is perfect for those who have an interest in Greek mythology. It is also the first in the series, giving you more books to read if you liked this one!

Sounds interesting - YA novel with Greek mythology thrown in. Reminiscent of the memorable Percy Jackson series! Will check it out if I get a chance. Thanks for the review, @Laney K!

Interesting review. Your description of Kyle’s character and the tension of his recurring dream makes me curious about how the story unfolds. I am sure adding this to my reading list.

I would like to understand the connection Kyle and Myra's dreams and if their dreams really became a reality. I also want to understand the reason behind waking up at 3 am.

The idea of dreams and premonitions tying into a larger mystery is interesting, but the lack of depth in some of the characters might make it harder for me to fully connect with the story. I’m not sure I’ll read it, especially with so many characters to keep track of.

The story has a compelling premise with strong suspense, especially with the dreams tying the characters together. While the pacing and mystery kept me hooked, the character development could have used more depth to make the supporting cast stand out. Still, it’s a solid read for young adults who enjoy mythology.
