Review of Terra Firma
Terra Firma, by Jessahme Wren, takes place in a future where humans and extraterrestrials coexist, and intergalactic travel is commonplace. Sev, a young girl, tries to survive a hard life alongside her father, Del. After her mother’s death, Sev has to survive on the bare minimum and help her father harvest calcet, a precious gem. To harvest the gem, they frequently travel to Terra Firma, a deadly planet with a lush but contaminated environment full of poisonous air and fatal spores. It is no place for a child. Sev’s life and future change forever when Del tries something reckless during their latest trip to Terra Firma. Will Sev survive this misfortune? What will happen to her? Read the book to know how Sev’s life takes an unexpected turn.
The book is for younger audiences struggling with self-discovery. Sev is a relatable character who does her best to support her father. She is just, practical, empathetic, and has a good heart. Yet she is still a typical teenager with mood swings and sensitivity. Her journey tells us that to be a family, one doesn’t need to be related by blood. Sometimes, found family treats us better than the parents who birthed us.
This book is based on love, companionship, bonding, mutual respect, and self-discovery. Sev’s life reminds us that sometimes through a loss we achieve the impossible dream. Sev is a determined girl who is far too mature for her age. This makes her my favorite character.
The writing style is genre-appropriate. There is nothing I disliked about this book. There are some errors that could’ve been avoided. However, they do not detract from the overall impact of the story. Thus, I rate this book 4 out of 5. This book has relatable characters, realistic situations, and a futuristic theme.
I recommend this book to both young and mature readers. This book has many beautiful messages on life and is a quick read. The pacing keeps the reader engaged, and the plot twists are unexpected yet satisfying.
