Cabbages in the Smoke by Deborah Kent is a tale of two families. The story begins with a tarot card reading, that was organised at the last minute for a family in deep trouble. Jimmy, the brother of the lady of the house, is also invited to the psychic reading. Jimmy is an ex-criminal and is buried deep in drug crime. His troubles are never-ending, and he is trying hard to set his life on the path to correction. However, this reading turned into something Jimmy had never expected.

As foretold by the psychic reader, his life then takes him on a journey to a far-off cabbage farm. On the farm, the McKay family is also struggling in their own way. Here, Jimmy meets Madeline McKay and is captivated by her beauty, but everything is not as it seems. Once again, he is at a crossroads in his life, where he must choose between right and wrong. Whether he will rise above his past or again fall back into the depths of crime forms the main plot of the book Cabbages in the Smoke.

One of the best things about the story is its intriguing title. When I selected the book for review, I was really impressed with the title. The Greek proverb means that sometimes things are not evident, and it is difficult to know what is true. But in time, everything will be revealed.

The plot of the story is really compelling and full of twists and turns. The story unfolds in a suspenseful way. The author has created amazing characters and has put so much effort into narrating the thought process and internal struggles. Each character is unraveled through their inner dialogue, and it is the main positive aspect of the story.

However, there were a few issues that prevented me from enjoying the gripping plot to its fullest. The first issue was that there were many typos in the narrative. And due to this, it was difficult to follow what was happening in the story. At times, it was quite confusing and unclear to understand. Additionally, the narrative advances at an extremely slow pace, and certain parts felt really dull and monotonous while reading.

Due to the reason mentioned above, I rate the book 3 out of 5. There were many grammatical errors that prevented me from giving a better rating. There are few instances of borderline and non-borderline profanity. The book also has some erotic content, so the reader's discretion is advised.
