This book is an absolute masterpiece at capturing the heart of the reader. I rate it a 5 out of 5, for the following reasons: first, the simplicity of the writing allowed me to easily follow along- and yet it has a very strong pull of benevolent human emotions like empathy and resilience, and I found myself thinking about the characters whenever I stopped reading. Second, the creativity the children displayed under extreme circumstances was incredibly inspiring to learn from, and also caused me to appreciate all the luxuries we have in America (or any developed area of the world). Third, the children’s determination and love for education was displayed throughout the entirety; even showing how their own interests propelled their greatest career achievements. This clear picture of how beneficial education is to one’s self and to the world is a shining attribute of the book. Fourth, the characters’ display of virtuous behavior in the face of social injustices was wonderful to read about and I really think it should be considered for a nationwide school reading requirement. Their ability to solve problems in the face of hopeless conditions is something every child needs to see, and know that the power to overcome problems are possible.
Fifth and finally, I think it is a great resource to expand knowledge and understanding about other countries- it caused me to wonder about real issues Africa is having, even to desire to research the current issues about orphans around the world and if I could make a difference in some small way. I am excited to share this book with my children and friends, and would recommend it to anyone at any age. This masterpiece is a gem to be sure, connecting us worldwide with the love a family can have, whatever that may look like.
