The Sentinel’s Code: Awakenings by Dr. Alicia Roose was a decent book to read. I do recommend this book to be read by anyone young adult or older.

The Sentinel’s Code: Awakenings is about a young woman, Angel Mendez, joining what seems to be a covert military group in order to change her life. Along the way, she comes to grip with who she is and who she wants to be, going from a loner all by herself to a leader of a team.

I gave this book three out of five stars because while the plot is decent, the tone of the story does not convey the urgency the text is attempting to convey. The characters around Angel seem to stay the exact same throughout the story, and the conflict between Angel and Chloe seems to be artificially manufactured. While Angel’s backstory does seem to haunt her, she seems to get over what happened to her from one moment to the next, preventing those who want to empathize with the character from doing so. We also do not get to know any of the thoughts of the other characters and only get small glimpses directly into Angel’s mind throughout the novel.

The latter half of the book continuing the same tone as the first half does not allow the reader to feel like it is high stakes. Too short of a timespan happens between some actions taken in the novel and the actions of Angel and her time, not allowing for the suspension of disbelief, especially when a different timespan was given. The editing of the book could have been done better as well.

The Sentinel’s Code: Awakenings feels like it would have been a great novel, had the tone throughout the novel changed to fit the scene. I feel like this book did not quite live up to the premise that was given to the reader. Readers who enjoy something quick and easy to read are likely to enjoy this book.
