Just as the title states, Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants, is a story that is set on an island. The Four Quadrants mean the places that Matthew and Ryan visit so as to achieve their adventure on this strange island. I was greatly amazed that this book was written by Caleb J. Boyer at the age of twelve. I believe you will like to read this book because at this age, the author’s mind was still very ‘fresh’.
Having stated that this book was written when the author was still very young, I therefore hope that you will understand why there are naïve terminologies and repeated phrases in several parts of this book. A good example of such phrases is ‘peeing on pants’, ‘dude’ and the rest.
Now in this story, two boys, Mathew and Ryan wake up only to find themselves on the beach of an unknown island. They have no proper knowledge of their past lives. All that these boys know is that the margarine of friendship is sandwiched between them. Before arriving at this peculiar place, the two are playing video games at Ryan’s home. This island is scary since nothing can be seen except the ocean, a volcano and the jungle. An old water vessel appears to be their redeemer but when it sinks into the deep waters, it seems that the boys’ hopes have equally sunk down with it.
I really loved this story very much as the author ends almost every chapter with a cliff-hanger thus creating a myriad of suspense in the story. I equally admired how the boys are hopeful, determined and employs their unity so as to succeed even though the odds appear to be going against their desires. Caleb’s main message in this book can be summarized in just one proverb; a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Caleb encourages us to love and appreciate the little that we may be having. He equally emphasizes on the significance of being hopeful and focused in our everyday life.
I would prescribe Island Games to lovers of fantasy and adventures. This story passes out significant lessons that all readers will definitely love to learn and practice. This book intrigues and captivates a reader from the very first page to the last.
As I finished reading this book, I was inspired and motivated by its great teachings and lessons. The humor and adventures equally made me love this book. I therefore rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
