A Bloody Book by Chris Bowen is about the feeling of hope within children and how it can quickly turn into despair through tragedy. The story follows our main character Maxx as he starts as an ideal student at kindergarten only to be passionless and rebellious by the time he hits thirteen. Now in the ‘Reading Hell' class with his friends, the readers get to experience glimpses of Maxx's past that led to his character developing from hopeful and bright to cynical and apathetic.

This book is compelling because it shows you the real reasons why youth today give up without a hint of a façade. There is no sugar-coating, no hand-holding and no rose-coloring. This book will give you the hard truth, and that's why I think it is its greatest strength. It holds no punches; it shows you why hopelessness preys upon youth through good story-telling and writing. Despite being a fictional story; all the problems the fictional characters face is something that can be applicable in real life. It makes the story informing the readers. Sort of like a memoir, but with the added benefit of not having to follow a strict plotline.

A Bloody Book reached to me for I have experienced the theme that the Author is trying to convey. When I was young; I was a student first and a kid second. I would focus entirely on learning and the pursuit of academic achievements for I was passionate about it. I wanted to learn, I tried to garner knowledge, so I express to people that need it. However, like the Main Character Maxx; I've soon lost this passion because of past events. This book made me relate to the protagonist and the supporting characters because I've been through their pain and struggle.

A Bloody Book is exceptionally well-written, the prose is well-balanced and organized, the dialogue sounds organic and realistic, and despite being written in a first-person perspective, it doesn't feel enclosing. This good writing is all to be expected because the author Chris Bowen is a teacher and wrote other books before.

I do have one problem with this book, and it's this: The book is dark. It features themes such as violence and abuse. As a result; It can be a turn off for certain readers, and thus I do not recommend this book for the faint of heart or for people who are looking for a more light-hearted story. I do recommend this book though to struggling students and aspiring teachers; both can learn something from this.

After all that is said and done I would happily say that this book has won me over. For its sharp writing, its powerful themes, and its ability to display them in an honest way. I give A Bloody Book by Chris Bowen a 4 out of 4 Stars.
