The Bloody Book by Chris Bowan is a young adult book written from the point of view of a very young adult. I know at first that seems like a redundant statement but let me stress the word adult in the phrase “young adult.” This story is about a young boy named Maxx who has seen much more in his lifetime than the average adult. This story takes you through so many twists and turns; you know exactly where you are going but have no idea how you are going to get there. Little Maxx takes you on an unexpected journey through some of the hardest and most intense parts of his life while a the same time reveling the most emotional parts of his soul that he never wanted nor intended on sharing.

When it comes to books in the young adult category it can sometimes be a struggle identifying and relating to the main characters as an adult. This was not the case with The Bloody Book by Chris Bowan! As soon as you start reading this book you are drawn in by the main character; the way he walks, the way he acts and the little clues he gives you about his life and the way he functions. Every time you learn something new about Maxx you want to learn more! As he narrates the book you can tell he is very young but you can also tell from the very beginning he has experienced a lot in his life.

From the get-go I identified a lot with the main character, I believe that is what made me fall in love with the book early on. I understood what it was like to have a dysfunctional family growing up, to be the one that takes care of your siblings, to yearn for a “normal” life. That resonated with me a lot and I feel there are a lot of other people out there that it will resonate with as well. This book gives people a lot of insight into what someone who feels like an outcast is thinking. I honestly believe that anyone can enjoy this book but I feel like young adults like Maxx and grown adults who have been through what Maxx has been through will really identify with this book the most. Although it is a young adult book, in my opinion, it has that true crime type of vibe to it so I feel all kinds of people should give it a read.

To be honest I do not really have any negative things to say about this book. Obviously, no one is perfect but I truly loved this book. I found myself always trying to get back to read more. I would be in groups of people or even at work trying to get another page in. The only thing I would say is that I wish there was more to read. I want to know what happens to Maxx and Rosie, how their life went, who Rosie grew up to be but I guess that’s what makes it good; it leaves you wanting more.

The Bloody Book by Chris Bowan was an amazing, intriguing, intense read. I rate this book a hard 4 out of 4, no question. I was drawn in by this book from the very beginning and it kept me wanting more even after it ended. It has so many twists and turns that it is almost impossible to get bored, you were always on the edge of your seat. Let me just leave you with this, sometimes you got to do what you got to do to survive; even when you are 9 years old.
