Rowan Wood Legends by Olivia Wildenstein is a fantasy novel. It is the second book in The Lost Clan series. The book follows the life of the protagonist, Catori Price. The book was written from the protagonist's perspective, and it highlighted a lot of issues.
Catori (Cat) Price is part faerie. She has the ability to choose whether to be a faerie or be human (a hunter). She is able to see through faerie glamour, and she is one of the few people who can see the faerie world. She is home, still reeling from loosing her mother, when there is a knock at the door. Her best friend's brother, Jimmy, has just arrived with bad news. Holly has just died. This shocks Cat because Holly was an ancient faerie. Moreover, the manner in which she dies suggests that she contracted chicken pox. Faeries heal from human ailments and this is disturbing, to say the least. When Ace Wood visits her on the same night, Cat suspects that Ace killed Holly. With an ancient faerie (Borgo Lief) in her town, the danger to her increases tenfold. Her friend, Kajika, asks her to pick a side. Will Cat choose to be a hunter or will she choose to be a faerie? How did Holly die? Did Ace Wood kill her? Why has Borgo Lief come to Cat's town? All these questions will be answered in this amazing book.
I encountered many themes in this book. The main theme I encountered was conflict. The hunters and faeries do not get along. Cat is thrust into the middle of this conflict. She is being pressured to pick a side. I also encountered grief as a major theme. Cat lost her mother Nora. The book also begins with Holly's untimely death. Another major theme I encountered was betrayal. Cat blames her mothers death on Stella. She pretended to be her friend, lied to her, and stole her book. The anger she has towards Stella is valid. I also encountered themes like trust, love, deception, hatred, and freedom. The author uses these themes masterfully to not only make the characters interesting but to also make the plot memorable.
The character development in this book was written masterfully. Cat is distrustful of most faeries, but she has mixed feelings when it comes to Ace Wood. The pressure she faces to pick a side makes her reluctant to make this choice. She wants to be independent and also be able to protect herself. She is fearful of Borgo Lief. Her growth throughout this book was something I followed intently. The author sets up a mystery in Holly's death. There is also a mystery as to what happens to faeries after death. The characters made the plot captivating. I enjoyed myself following Cat's adventures throughout this book.
I rated the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because I found the plot captivating and highly addictive. I could not take a break from reading this amazing book. I did not encounter a single spelling or grammatical error. This led me to believe that the book was professionally edited. I did not encounter a single thing that I hated about this book.
I would recommend this book to fantasy fans. The story is an adventure that is captivating from the beginning of the book. I would recommend that the reader should read the first book in this series. I look forward to reading more of the author's books.
