The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid follows a young boy named William Cleary who mysteriously disappears along with his twin sister and several other children. Only little William Cleary returns home with two unlikely pets. His parents never stopping to find his twin sister thrusts William into a new world. William’s journey begins when he discovers “Echoland”. According to the book, every child born in the human world is called a “sound”. An identical child is born in Echoland called an “echo”. Both are independent of each other, but William’s echo is very important to the realm of Echoland. The questions of the story are who kidnapped all of these children and why? More importantly, will William be able to return home again?
Pellucid’s book is definitely a great read if you’re looking to fill the void left behind by the end of Harry Potter novels. Pellucid creates this Young Adult Fantasy novel beautifully. The setting and description of Pellucid’s world, Echoland, sparks the imaginations of readers without being overwhelming. Pellucid is also selective of the details she chooses to describe Echoland. In being selective of each detail, Pellucid avoids the problem some authors face and that is boring the reader by trying to describe everything. Instead, Pellucid describes Echoland while continuing to move the story forward. I find that authors with this kind of talent for balance are few in number.
Pellucid’s plot and chapter development is very nicely paced. Pellucid’s chapters are set in a way where the reader can feel comfortable stopping to rest. This story works in Pellucid’s favor for younger readers or readers who don’t like to read for long spans of time. I also enjoyed the dialogue within this book. Each character has a distinctive voice and each voice is consistent with the character.
There is only one drawback for me in the book and that was it’s predictability. This story is fun and full of new worlds and adventures, but knowing which characters to trust- and not to trust- was transparent during my reading. This does take away from any anticipation and mystery from the overall plot of the story, but it didn’t take everything away from the experience of reading this book. I still thoroughly enjoyed reading this book that I would love to read a sequel should it present itself.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book is such a pleasure to read that anything under a 3 star rating is ridiculous. What pushed this story into the 4 star rating despite the predictability was that the book is very well written and edited. The whole reading of this book felt smooth and understanding its contents came naturally. I didn’t have to go back and re- read any particular part of the story. Dew Pellucid’s book is great for any fantasy genre enthusiasts and I highly recommend it.
