The Bloody Book by Chris Bowen is the story of a lost 13-year-old, Maxx. Poverty, welfare, domestic violence, child abuse, anger, drug addiction, hunger, is the life of Maxx. All Maxx wants is a normal life with hugs, food on the table, and love. The people, who should provide these basic needs of life, are parents, teachers, and social workers. However, all fail to deliver, and Maxx is left desperate, hopeless and doomed. Mr. Foxx, an unorthodox teacher, offers Maxx the chance to escape from Hell, or as called “Reading Hell.”
I enjoyed reading this book. The Bloody Book is a novel and captivating story of strong characters. The students in “Reading Hell,” portrayed as hard, suspicious, and vulnerable. After years of failed teachers, with their well-meaning blunders, Mr. Foxx through sarcasm, truth, and genuine caring drag these students back to learning.
The final assignment that Mr. Foxx assigned his students is a writing assignment with the topic “Speak the truth, any truth.” The beginning of Maxx’s story. He turned in a few lines in his 8th-grade class and received an “A” with Mr. Foxx’s email address; for when Maxx writes the final assignment. The reader does not know the Maxx’s age when he finally writes the book and emails to Mr. Foxx. All the reader knows is that Maxx tells his own story.
A well-edited book, I found no errors. Thank you, Chris Bowen, for ensuring the book is error free. The quality represents the worth of the teacher. The intensity of the story told with humor, understanding, horror, and reality, keeps the reader enthralled. I ashamed to say, I laughed at some scene, when I should have reacted with the same horror experienced by the child.
The Bloody Book deserved a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Chris Bowen understands his students, and he describes the anguish that students feel and communicates the need of education that our society needs. I see my son struggle with his demon of poor education. He wants to read and tries to read. Thus, the e-reader and audible books allow him the opportunity, that his teachers and the school failed to provide. Even though, I fought battles, provided him with the equipment, and support he needed. A child needs support and love.
The reading of this book by all, especially teachers, parents, and students should be required. I would recommend this book for all adults and preteen readers. Some children are old at 9.
