Alaska is a cold, dark place and it grows colder every day as Will Cleary watches his parents search hopelessly for Emmy. Will and his sister were abducted as babies and although Will miraculously returned with two strange animal companions, Emmy never did. As Will’s reality begins to unravel he finds himself sucked into Echoland, a frozen world with crystal balls, icy doppelgängers and best of all his sister! However, Will quickly discovers that his destiny is woven into something much bigger than himself…he must help save Echoland. And it won’t be easy.
The Crystilleries of Echoland is a Sci-fi/Fantasy novel by Dew Pellucid. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The grammar, syntax and prose in the book are flawless and the storytelling is captivating. The author creates a mesmerizing world wrapped in crystal, complete with turmoil and adventure. This book really shines in the attention to detail. Reading this book was like being swept away to an icy kaleidoscope of adventure.
Personally, my favorite part was the sheer creativity. I was very impressed with the quirky personalities and character descriptions, but also with the intricate attention to the setting and background. Every inch of frozen earth and icy stone comes to life Echoland. The author took great care in thoroughly developing this parallel reality. On top of that, the characters are charismatic and have genuine relationships with each other.
Conversely, my least favorite part was the length of certain sequences. It seemed like some of the sections were drawn out while others did not last long enough. For example, I would have preferred more time to be spent on the journey into Harmoniá instead of all the rising action at the orphanage. Perhaps the rising action at the orphanage was necessary, but the end needed development as well. I got the feeling that the story was wrapping up too quickly even though the book was starting to seem a bit long. There is plenty of story line to make this into several books, that could have been one possible solution.
I feel this book would appeal greatly to young adult readers and older children. The fantasy portions of this novel are breathtaking and rapturous while the characters are strong and good natured. Some potentially frightening sequences could make this book inaccessible for very young readers. Overall, this is an excellent read filled with energy and adventure.
