I was drawn to The Crystilleries of Echoland, written by Dew Pellucid, based on the very unique premise of this story. It takes place in a fantasy land where the echoes of our land exist. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book and could not put it down.

Children are disappearing. Will Cleary is about to turn 13. When he was 2, he and his sister disappeared. He returned after a week, but she did not. This has never happened before. He brought with him two faithful companions, a wolf and a falcon. When he decides to look for his sister, they introduce him to the land they came from. Echoland is a beautiful frozen land where the reflections of human existence live. For every child born and Echo is created. It drifts off at birth to live forever in Echoland.

Will is a Sound, the human counterpart of an Echo. When a Sound dies, his Echo is executed in Echoland. This is the job of the Fate Sealers. Fortune Tellers keep track of which Sounds die in order to enforce the death law. On his journey to find his sister, he learns that his Echo is very important in Echoland. Will must help his Echo save the land from tyranny. There are many trials and tribulations on his quest to help his Echo. He doesn’t know who to trust. There are Fate Sealers, Fortune Tellers and other monsters trying to stop him.

There wasn’t much to dislike about this book, however, I was at times confused and had to double back over what I was reading. Most of the time, I eventually figured out what was going on simply by continuing with the story. However, there were times that I remained confused. It’s a fine line between a fast paced plot and not giving enough information along the journey.

What I liked most about this book was the idea itself. The Echoes and Sounds are quite a unique concept. I really enjoyed learning about Echoland and all of its magic. This story ended quite nicely, but I feel the author left an opening for another book and I would be excited to read a sequel.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was well written, fast paced and gripping. There were almost no spelling or grammatical errors. This book is aimed at adolescents, but I think everyone would enjoy this book. There is some concern about the violence in the story. However, I find that it’s not too much for a mature tween to handle. If you liked Harry Potter, this is the book for you.
