What is your favourite quote, theme/topic or lesson that you personally took away from the Alchemist when you read it?

It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.

Well it’s like The Wizard Of Oz. You’ll find your heart’s desire at home.

Something I really connected with was his willingness to follow his own personal legend and put it all on the line to live an extraordinary life.

“One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.”
I think this quote was life-changing for me. Love needs no reason, love is not logical, love should not need a reason to exist. All other feelings need a reason, hate, lust, anger, fear but love is there unconditionally.

“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.”

This particular quote really resonated with me. It reminds one that persistence is the key to success, and that you cannot allow setbacks to permanently derail you.

And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you acheive it.

It is the journey that matters not the treasure. The treasure is only the trigger of the journey but the lessons you really gain are from the experiences of your journey to finding the treasure. It felt hilarious that the treasure was actually at the starting point of his adventures all along. When reading through the first dozens of pages, I thought that the treasure is located in a faraway land but it turns out the opposite. I guess, it's still meaningful that he did not know the treasure was near because it allowed him to go on adventures of self-discovery and life exploration, which made this book truly captivating.

It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. As a dreamer myself it is my mantra in life.

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you acheive it.“

I actually knew this quote before I ever read the book. My sister gave it to me as advice when I was thinking about doing my PhD abroad but worried about all the difficulties that this would bring along. This quote helped me realize that it was the thing I “wanted” and that I just needed to find the courage to ask for what I want, and then the universe would do the rest
I had a wallpaper of this quote on my desktop for half a year, and I still come back to it whenever I need emotional support to do the more courageous things in life ^^.

“No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn't know it.”

I love this quote because it captures the mystery of life and the spiritual purpose we all have here on earth. There is so much we don't know which is why trusting outcomes is always a good idea. We just don't know....

I just read the sample again, and have a new favorite quote from the book.

"Even if my neighbor doesn’t understand my religion or understand my politics, he can understand my story. If he can understand my story, then he’s never too far from me."

Seems important at this time in history. We need to listen to each other's stories.

While at the surface of the book`s story there was a lot of action, through the determined and never give up attitude of Santiago, it dawned on me that this book`s subtext is a story about everyone's` life journey (starting as a shepherd to finding himself & his girl, validating the quest which meant he become sure his efforts paid off, to finally holding on fast to what he valued from the start of the journey). The book even ended pleasantly with a private internal moment for the character to have been `proven`to be correct.
