Official Review: Gracee and Gugu's Greatest Day

In case you didn't know, little kids ask a LOT of questions. This makes it especially fitting that Felicia Miles is kicking off her series, The Adventures of Gracee and Gugu, with a book built around a question. In Gracee and Gugu's Greatest Day, Gracee asks her grandfather ("Gugu") what his favorite day was. His reply is simple: "I will let you guess."
The rest of the 36-page children's book is full of Gracee's guesses. She rattles off guess after guess, and although Gugu keeps telling her that she's wrong, she comes up with some terrific memories. She guesses their first nap together, their first time watching The Walking Dead together, and all sorts of touching memories. But the answer at the end is even better.
The book is told with alternating paragraphs: Gracee takes a guess and Gugu comments on her guess. The font is cute and thick, making it easy to read from far away while showing off the photos. The photos themselves all have a sketch effect applied to them. This not only makes the photos blend into the pages better, but it's also a great style choice for the book. Felicia did a remarkable job of choosing the photos, and whoever originally took the photos did an amazing job of capturing heartfelt, genuine moments. Their love for one another is evident on every single page.
Gracee and Gugu's Greatest Day isn't just a cute book to show the love between a grandfather and granddaughter. It's also proof that a relationship where a child is raised by grandparents is just as legitimate as one between a child and his/her parents. Felicia wrote: "As with many children today being raised by grandparents there are plenty of questions and situations that need to be explained or dealt with in a way so that children don’t feel abnormal compared to everyone else."
I really enjoyed Gracee and Gugu's Greatest Day. It's clear a lot of thought was put into the photos, and there's an awesome mix of great moments shown throughout the book. I was worried that I'd get sick of the format, but I never did. I didn't see any errors, and there's nothing that would exclude anyone from reading it (there are no adult topics, there's no profanity, and religion isn't mentioned). My rating of Gracee and Gugu's Greatest Day is 4 out of 4 stars. I'd recommend it to grandparents of young children, whether they're raising the children or just see them regularly. I'd also recommend it to parents who want to promote a relationship between their children and their children's grandparents.
