Harry and Emma Pet Detectives: The Missing Dog by Rayner Nixon is a children’s book about two miniature sausage dogs named, Harry and Emma, and their owner, Ray. Ever since Harry and Emma were small, Ray knew that he was telepathically linked with them. One day, while they were out for their walk, Ray, Harry, and Emma spotted a poster on a nearby lamp post. The poster stated that a Jack Russell Terrier went missing a few days ago. It is now up to Harry and Emma to use their detective skills and solve the mystery to find the missing dog. Will they find the missing Jack Russell Terrier and save the day?

What I really liked about the book, was the beautiful illustrations, done by Jade Conlin, that followed the text. The drawings are colorful and happy, this is important because it helps children picture the story and follow along to the words. Also, I like that the pictures in the book are big, and they take up the majority of a page. This means children won’t have difficulty in seeing and understanding what’s going on in the picture. My favorite part of the book is when Harry and Emma are by the fireplace, and they are thinking of how they are going to solve this mystery. I think it’s very funny that the two dogs are trying to solve it.

What I disliked about the book, was that apart from the first page, the font size of the text on the other pages is too small. This can be a problem as children will find it difficult to read. In addition to that, there are a lot of instances where there are missing commas in sentences. This affects the flow of reading when you read it out loud. Furthermore, there are some inconsistencies throughout the book, at the start of the book Harry, and Emma are trying to look for the missing dog. However, on the last page, it says, “Without their detective skills Sophie’s master might never have been found”. Implying that Harry and Emma were looking for Sophie instead of the missing dog.

Another inconsistency is also on the last page, there is some dialogue between Sophie and Arthur but in the picture it’s Ray. This made me very confused because I didn’t know if the author accidentally wrote Arthur instead of Ray. A simple solution to this problem would be to put the dialogue on a separate page with a picture of Arthur so that readers don’t get confused. Finally, another thing I didn’t like in the book, was how the author referred to the dog’s owner as being their ‘master’. I think the word ‘master’ is too harsh of a word, and I would prefer the word ‘owner’ more, as it’s softer and friendlier.

Overall, I would rate this book 2 out of 4 stars because the initial idea is great, however, there are a lot of grammatical mistakes throughout the book. This book definitely needs to undergo another round of editing. I would recommend this book to children of the ages 4-7. I think they will enjoy looking at the colorful pictures and reading along.
