Review of The Beaverlings Curse
The Beaverlings’ Curse is a children’s fiction book written by Brent Carlson. It is a perfect bedtime story with fun and colourful illustrations that will appeal to children and engage them with the story.
The Beaverlings’ live in the cold northern woods. All of them are short with big stocky muscles. They are all craftsmen and are responsible for building houses, bridges, and dams. Close by lives an evil sorceress. The Beaverlings’ constructed the bridge over the moat of the sorceresses castle and a dam on the castle lake. One day it poured with rain, and the rising of water in the lake caused the dam to break. Although this wasn’t anyone’s fault, the sorceress was furious and blamed the clan of craftsmen. Her punishment would change the life of every Beaverling for all time.
The illustrations in the book are perfect for children as they are bright and colourful and explain the story in a visual way that is very appealing to children. I thought it was nice that some pages only had illustrations and no text. The language used is simple, entertaining, and appropriate for children. The words match perfectly with the artwork. The combination provides a fitting book for children to read alone or to engage with an adult.
There are some lovely messages included in the book. The author writes about acceptance and appreciating diversity. These messages are beneficial to instil in young minds to create better environments without teasing and bullying. I also thought it was a clever idea that the evil character has the personality traits of an ignorant bully, unable to accept anyone different.
There is an educational aspect to this book. Children will learn about nature in this book. This education is great to add some learning into a fun and captivating fiction book. All in all, the book has more than meets the eye. It is a fabulous story with powerful messages and some interesting facts and education. I didn’t expect to find so much in this relatively short children’s story, so this came as a welcome surprise.
I didn’t find any spelling or grammar errors as the book is exceptionally edited. I found nothing to dislike about the book, and I was impressed by its content. The artwork is fantastic and a perfect addition to the story. I loved how the author added valuable life lessons with educational content. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a perfect book for young children, and it can encourage some conversation after reading regarding its content.
