Returning from the beach, young girl Matilda brings home a baby she finds lying on the beach. She refuses to let go of the baby and insists on calling her Peri Periwinkle. The Turner family takes Peri under its wing as they live in one of the abandoned railway carriages in Rye Bay, England. Matilda knows she has to tell Peri her real identity very soon; she would eventually notice the peculiarity of her strawberry blond tresses from that of her sisters’. How will Peri take the truth? What future awaits for Matilda and Peri in a time when war makes life uncertain? Peri Periwinkle of Rye Bay by Carol Prior takes us on a child's journey as she discovers life outside her railway carriage home.

Reading the book was like reading poetry. I was enchanted by the author's beautiful narrative. I was able to visualize the setting with her words: "the sun was out for the first time in days, turning the grass to sparkling, dewy diamonds." Set in wartime England, it was easy to visualize the scenes because of the author’s ability to create vivid imagery through her words. The peculiarity of dialogues spoken by some characters added beauty to the storytelling; the unfamiliar terms and shortened words allowed me to research and widen my knowledge. The story was simple enough for young readers to follow; the author's crisp storytelling made it enjoyable to read.

The characters were endearing. Matilda was wise beyond her years; she grew on me in no time at all. Peri was the typical child, carefree and curious. Both characters were relatable. Prior made me reminisce my childhood as Peri caught a venomous snake, and wandered too far from home and lost her way. There were humorous parts; I found myself laughing as I read them. Many times, I found myself pausing to absorb the message of many scenes: the significance of love between family members; the security of home and the importance of emotional support provided by loved ones. I have read many affecting stories and this was one.

I observed just one grammatical error: on page 194, Daupling was spelled as Dauplin.

Peri Periwinkle of Rye Bay by Carol Prior was an engaging book. The single grammatical error led me to believe the novel was professionally edited, providing a smooth reading experience. The book deserves the highest rating. Thus, I give it 4 out of 4 stars.

The novel is for everyone, young or old. But if you are looking for exciting genres like suspense or action, look elsewhere.

Not just the story, the title and the names of the characters also sound poetic. Lovely review.

The title of the book caught my eye. This sounds like a very emotional and beautiful story drenched with bits of hurts and uncertainty with its setting during the war. Forbthe author to capture all that is amazing

I thought this was meant to be a children's book, but I suppose it's a great read for people of all age groups. The storyline is beautiful, and the narration is charming. Excellent review, and equally excellent review.
